The 6 Levels of Vehicle Automation
The advancement of vehicle automation has brought about many changes in the driving experience. Today’s cars and trucks can do a great deal to assist drivers, from providing blind spot monitoring to keeping the vehicle within its lane to even taking control of the car in certain situations. But what levels of vehicle automation are available today, and how do they differ?
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International has developed a system of six levels of vehicle automation, ranging from no automation (Level 0) to full automation (Level 5). Here’s a quick overview of the levels:
Level 0: This level covers all vehicles with no automation, where the driver is responsible for controlling the vehicle at all times.
Level 1: This level covers vehicles with driver assistance features, such as adaptive cruise control or lane keep assist. The driver is still in control, but the automated systems can provide assistance.
Level 2: This level covers vehicles with partial automation, which allow for hands-free operation in certain circumstances. For example, the car can take control of the accelerator, brakes and steering, but the driver must stay alert and prepared to intervene.
Level 3: This level covers vehicles with conditional automation, in which the car can manage most safety-critical functions under certain conditions, but the driver must be ready to take back control when needed.
Level 4: This level covers vehicles with high automation, in which the car is able to perform all safety-critical functions in certain conditions, but the human driver must be present and ready to intervene if needed.
Level 5: This level covers vehicles with full automation, where the car is capable of performing all safety-critical functions under all conditions without any human intervention.
