Transport Layer in the OSI Model

The transport layer of the OSI model is responsible for providing reliable services to the upper layers. This layer ensures that messages are delivered without error and that they arrive in the correct order. It also provides flow control to ensure that data is not sent faster than the receiver can process it.

What Does the Transport Layer Do?

The transport layer functions mainly by setting up virtual paths between two end systems, or nodes. These paths allow information to be broken down into smaller pieces, called packets, which are then sent separately across the network. The transport layer takes care of assembling these packets into their original form when they arrive at the destination.

The transport layer uses two main protocols: TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and UDP (User Datagram Protocol). TCP is used for transmitting data reliably, while UDP is used for transmitting data quickly and with less overhead. Both protocols use port numbers to identify the applications being used for communication.

Conclusion

In summary, the transport layer is responsible for end-to-end delivery and flow control of data. By establishing paths between two nodes, it ensures that data is transferred reliably and efficiently.
