How to verify ownership of a website in Google Search Console

Verifying ownership of your website in Google Search Console (GSC) is an important step to understand how your website appears in Google search results. It provides detailed information about how your site is indexed and crawled, and helps you resolve any indexing or crawl related issues.

Steps to verify ownership of your website:

  1. Log into your GSC account and click the ‘Add Property’ button on the left panel.
  2. Enter your URL into the ‘Add a Property’ box and click ‘Add’.
  3. You will be asked to verify the website via one of the four methods:
    • HTML File Upload
    • Google Tag Manager
    • Domain Name Provider
    • Google Analytics
  4. Select the ‘HTML File Upload’ option and download the HTML verification file.
  5. Upload the verification file to the root and home directories of your website. It is recommended that you use an FTP client like FileZilla to upload the file quickly.
  6. Once the verification file is uploaded, return to the GSC verification screen and click on ‘Verify’.
  7. You should see a success message confirming that your website has been verified.

Congratulations! You have successfully verified your website in GSC. Now you can start monitoring the performance of your website, and make sure it is properly indexed and crawled by Google.
