What is Machine Learning?

Machine learning is a form of artificial intelligence (AI) that provides computers with the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. Machine learning focuses on the development of computer programs that can access data and use it to learn for themselves. The process of learning begins with observations or data, such as examples, direct experience, or instruction, in order to look for patterns in data and make better decisions in the future based on the examples that we provide.

The primary aim of machine learning is to allow computers to learn automatically without human intervention or assistance and adjust actions accordingly. This technology is used in a wide variety of applications, such as data mining, natural language processing, image recognition, and expert systems. Machine learning is closely related to computational statistics, which also focuses on prediction-making through the use of computers.

Machine learning algorithms build a mathematical model based on sample data, known as "training data", in order to make predictions or decisions without being explicitly programmed to perform the task. A machine learning algorithm will learn from new data, allowing the program to adapt and improve over time. Machine learning can be supervised and unsupervised. In supervised learning, the program is presented with labeled training data which has been provided by humans. In unsupervised learning, the program is given unlabeled data and must find structure and meaning within it.

By leveraging advances in computing power and data storage, machine learning has become an essential tool in modern data analysis. It is used in a variety of applications including search engines, recommendation systems, online fraud detection, credit scoring, self-driving cars, medical diagnosis, robotics, and virtual personal assistants.
