String Copying in C: A Guide to strcpy and strncpy Functions

To design a function to copy a string into a destination string using strcpy() and strncpy() in C, we can use the following steps:

Declare the function prototype.

This tells the compiler the name of the function, the number and types of its parameters, and the type of its return value.

C Programming
void copy_string(char *dest, const char *src);

Implement the function body.

This is where we write the code that actually copies the string from the source string to the destination string.

C Programming
void copy_string(char *dest, const char *src) {
  // Check if the destination string is NULL.
  if (dest == NULL) {
    return;
  }

  // Check if the source string is NULL.
  if (src == NULL) {
    return;
  }

  // Copy the string from the source string to the destination string.
  // We use strcpy() if we want to copy the entire string, or strncpy() if
  // we only want to copy a certain number of characters.
  strcpy(dest, src);
}

Call the function.

To call the function, we pass the destination string and the source string as parameters.

C Programming
char dest[100];
const char *src = "This is a test string.";

copy_string(dest, src);

 Complete example of a function to copy a string into a destination string using strcpy() and strncpy() in C:

C Programming
#include <stdio.h>
#include <string.h>

void copy_string(char *dest, const char *src);

int main() {
  char dest[100];
  const char *src = "This is a test string.";

  copy_string(dest, src);

  printf("The copied string is: %s\n", dest);

  return 0;
}

void copy_string(char *dest, const char *src) {
  // Check if the destination string is NULL.
  if (dest == NULL) {
    return;
  }

  // Check if the source string is NULL.
  if (src == NULL) {
    return;
  }

  // Copy the string from the source string to the destination string.
  strcpy(dest, src);
}

Output:

The copied string is: This is a test string.
